Yes it does. I use course pink salt and it works well.
Here's how the grinding action works...
To open the wooden shakers, first twist off the metal part, then you lift the wooden part. Once open, pour in your salt or pepper. Then replace both the wooden and metal tops. As you start twisting the metal part to place it back in again, the salt or peppercorns will start grinding. That being said, the more you twist the top metal part, the finer the grind.
